Kumar Mahadevan, is an Indian chef, restaurant owner, Media personal based in Australia. He is fondly known as ‘Guru of Indian Cuisine’. He is known for his successfully running restaurant ‘Abhi’s’ in Australia, that he started in 1990. He has also appeared as a guest chef and mentor in the most famous TV reality show ‘Masterchef Australia’ season 2 and 4 respectively.
Career:
He studied catering in Madras Catering College, as advised by his friend. After finishing his graduation, he joined as an apprentice in Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, Mumbai. In 1981, he left to Iraq to join the new Sheraton Hotel for high salary. In 1985, he went to Australia to work in a joint venture by the Tea Board of India and Air India.
In 1987, he got married and he moved to Sydney with his wife. However, the hectic schedules and low wages started taking a toll on Kumar. He was freed from contract, when Mayur’s finances fell. After which, he joined Circular Quay in 1989 and became friends with owner Doug Moxon. They both started an Indian Restaurant together, named it Abhi’s, in 1990.
In 1994, the restaurant began to get positive reviews from critics and Abhi’s came to fame overnight. It was awarded 1 Chef’s Hat in ‘The Sydney Morning Herald’. Following the success, he opened ‘Aki’s’ in 2003, aimed to provide customer’s a fine-dining experience in Indian Cuisine. He, along with his wife has also written cookbooks.
