Subrahmanyam Jaishankar or S.Jaishankar, is an Indian Diplomat, who has been the Foreign Secretary of India, since 2015. He joined Indian Foreign services in the year 1977 and has also served as Indian Ambassador to United States, China, Czech Republic and as High Commissioner to Singapore. In addition to this, he has also played important role in negotiating the Indo-US Civilian nuclear agreement.
Jaishankar served as secretary in the Indian mission to the Soviet Union in Moscow from 1979 to 1981, he also learnt Russian. He was an undersecretary in the America’s division of India’s Ministry of External affairs, dealing with US. From 1985 to 1988, he served as the first secretary in the Indian embassy in Washington D.C.
From 1988 to 1990, he served as first secretary and political adviser to the India Peacekeeping Force (IPKF), in Srilanka. After his return to Delhi, he served in the Ministry of External Affairs and as Press secretary and speech writer for President of India Shankar Dayal Sharma. Currently he is serving as the foreign secretary of India, appointed by PM Modi on January 29, 2015.
