Mathunny Mathews, is an Indian, living in Kuwait, who is also fondly known as ‘Toyoto Sunny’, since he was working with Toyota for many years. He is well known for playing a key role in safely airlifting evacuation of over 170,000 Indians, from Kuwait, during the Invasion of Kuwait, in the year 1990. This is considered to be the largest evacuation, in the world history.
Career:
Mathunny Mathews, was from Kerala and Indian by birth. After completing his education, he reached Kuwait by ship, in the year 1956, as immigrant for employment and he worked in a Toyota Agency, owned by Al-Sayer group, for many years. In the year 1989, he retired as MD of the organization. Including this, he was also the Chairman of the Jabriya Indian School in Kuwait and one of the founder of the Indian Art’s Circle.
He is well-known for playing a key role in airlifting over 1.7 lakh Indians from Kuwait, after the Invasion of Kuwait, in 1990. This was carried out during the Persian Gulf War and Indians from Kuwait and Iraq, were evacuated through Air India, which holds the Guinness World record for evacuating most people in civil airliner. This operation was successfully carried out by Kuwait-based Indian Mathews, who was supported by Harbhajan Singh Vedi.
Recently, he passed away at his residence in Qadisya, Kuwait, on May 20, 2017. His funeral will be held in his native, Eraviperoor, Kerala. Many people are mourning the loss of the real-life hero, who saved their lives.
